Great Band, Great Record!
THE BLACKOUT BRIGADE
Death And Dishonesty:
If you like hard edged Punk Rock in the vein of Bonecrusher and Discipline then you're going to love the Blackout Brigade. From the opening song 'Open Scars' this is full on Punk music right through to the closing song 'Dead Or Alive'. The tidy guitar work and bass lines really make this album what it is and you wont be disappointed with this album at all. For me tracks such as 'Death And Dishonesty', 'Firing Squad', 'On Our Own' and 'Fight For Your Life' really did it for me. When so many Punk bands these days sounding so lame it's hard to want to check out a new band on the scene but the Blackout Brigade are worthy of a listen. They're one of the few Punk bands with so much urgency in their sound and I'm glad they're flying the Punk flame. Top band. 9/10 Street Voice News - June 2009
THE BLACKOUT BRIGADE:
Death and Dishonesty: CD
Ah, it’s the old “trick the reviewer by the look of your CD trick.” The dark cityscape and calligraphy style band title had me thinking I was about to venture into the territory of grouchy, growly metalihardcore. I couldn’t have been more wrong or more pleasantly surprised. The first song sounds as if you had Social Distortion getting wasted in the alley behind the club with Agnostic Front. Weird. After that early rough spot, it smoothed into good, if not standard, snotty punk that wouldn’t sound out of place on TKO Records. Soaring guitars + Piss + Vinegar = A good record to tip a few beers to. –Ty Stranglehold/Razorcake (Insurgence)

THE BLACKOUT BRIGADE - "HIGHLY RECOMMENDED"
From Maximumrocknroll...
The Blackout Brigade
Death And Dishonesty
Right on! Another solid release from Canada's premier street punk rock 'n' roll label out of Toronto! Insurgence has been consistently putting out top-notch material from some of the world's finest and best known left-leaning bands including ANGELIC UPSTARTS and THE OPPRESSED and THE BLACKOUT BRIGADE fits right in quite nicely for being relative newcomers. The music is tight and melodic with lots of chugga-chugga guitars layered with catchy leads and there are loads of big chanting/sing-along chourses. Highly recommended for any fan of really agressive and melodic streetpunk (ML)

THE BLACKOUT BRIGADE - "DEATH AND DISHONESTY"
OUT NOW ON INSURGENCE RECORDS...DEATH AND DISHONESTY...DEBUT FROM THE BLACKOUT BRIGADE

From the depths of the cold Canadian Prairies lurk the beer-fuelled, whiskey-driven, sing-along tales of the hardship, abuse and woe that is Blackout Brigade.
Formed after the breakup of the Oi/Hardcore sensation, The Knockarounds and the disbanding of the soulful '77 street punk style of The Crackdown, these outcasts quickly started putting a new set together, blending the two ex-bands' songs and influences into one formidable outlet of rage and angst.
With a live sound like brass knuckles to an ear drum and faces that only a blind mother could tolerate, this quintet of working class lowlifes have been packing clubs, dropping jaws and slaying critics since the first show in the summer of 2008. They've never looked back.
A tri-vocal assault of catchy street choruses inspired by overseas rockers the likes of Cocksparrer, The Bones and Discipline fused with the energy and angst from American punk/hardcore bands like Blood For Blood and Agnostic Front. The Blackout Brigade play a hard-rocking, no bullshit style of street rock-n-roll, comprised of breakneck bass lines, panty-melting guitar solos, and fist-pounding anthemic vocals. This band is sure to keep your head rocking and the bottles dropping.
Check out THE BLACKOUT BRIGADE and give the tune "Open Scars" a listen...amazing.

Reviews Of Insurgence Bands From PROFANE EXISTENCE!
Reviews of Insurgence bands from the latest issue of PROFANE EXISTENCE. A zine well worth supporting. Pick up a subscription, you get at least one or two free CDs with each copy of the zine!!
DEATH IN CUSTODY - Infected With Rage CD
This disc flys by you so fucking fast that you don't know what the hell hit you! Eleven tracks spat out in fourteen fucking minutes! This 4 piece outfit hail from Detroit, MI and you can tell that they are heavily influenced by NEGATIVE APPROACH and early AGNOSTIC FRONT. The music is tight and heavy and the vocals have a definate 80s sound to them. Thumbs up! (Ken Ciderpunk)
Insurgence Records / 2 Bloor St. W. Suite 100-184 / Toronto, Ontario/ M4W 3E2 Canada // www.insurgence.net
THE FALLOUT - Dismantlement CD
I really enjoyed their interview in the last issue and equally enjoyed this CD too. A breath of fresh air, with their catchy 70's punk styled songs. Good quality, full of hooks and great songs. Really well thought out lyrics and they have a great political view and plenty of attitude. (Mel Hughes)
Insurgence Records / 2 Bloor St. W. Suite 100-184 / Toronto, Ontario/ M4W 3E2 Canada // www.insurgence.net
THE PRESS The Complete Press 1984-1994 CD
Let me start by saying Oi! is not really my thing. I've always felt it was something of a nebulous concept and if a song doesn't have someone shouting Oi! at some point I just assume it's plain old punk (like that's a bad thing). But with that said, this collection of 15 tracks is a solid listen. Despite their heritage these guys remind me a more of WIPERS and SOCIAL DISTORTION than THE CLASH or THE BUSINESS, but that's just me. This stuff is catchy as hell and I think I'll be singing along in a matter of days. The songs are mostly about the working class blues, hanging out in bars, and giving the bosses their just desserts. Also, there's a song with klaxons, so this CD is automatically a winner in my book. Includes a sweet foldout lyric sheet/show flyer. Cool. (Matt Indignant)

DEATH IN CUSTODY - Review From Suburban Voice Zine...

From the latest SUBURBAN VOICE blog..check it out and listen to or download Al’s radio show SONIC OVERLOAD as well...
DEATH IN CUSTODY-Infected With Rage (Insurgence, CD)
I played a little word game while playing this long-overdue release from Detroit maulers Death In Custody (their previous demo came out quite awhile ago). I played a little word game while blasting this on the stereo and wrote down various impressions while listening and came up with "agitation," "mean," "toughness," "no BS." I mean, start with the title. That tells you right there this ain’t no garden party. Death In Custody come right at ’ya with a tough, about-to-explode hardcore sound that has a brawny approach but avoids the chug/breakdown element. Instead, part of the influence comes from older Boston and NYC hardcore and I was thinking that before hearing their cover of Last Rights-via-Slapshot’s "Do What You Want." A lyrical line that sums it all up? "That smirk that covers your face is where my boot will find its place." That’s from "Done," it’s about an asshole boss and there’s also reference made to said individual "staring down the barrel of a gun." Subtle. That’s one word that didn’t make my list. (2 Bloor St. W, Suite 100-184, Toronto, ON M4W 3E2, CANADA, www.insurgence.net)

The CD is available directly from INSURGENCE RECORDS, as well as from Interpunk, Itunes, etc...

MAXIMUM ROCK AND ROLL - BEST OF 2007
Nice...the latest issue of Maximum Rock N Roll has their contributers' annual Best Of lists. RamseyKanaan's list has Insurgence Records pegged at Number Three:
"3. Insurgence Records
It's definately not a competition, but Canada's Insurgence Records comes a close third. They've issued some wonderful complete collections, including that of NYC's The Press...America's first Oi! band who actually had a brain, and founder of S.H.A.R.P (Skinheads Against Racial Prejudice). Then, of course, there was the Skinhead Times collection by The Oppressed, a Welsh skin band who, inspired by The Press, founded S.H.A.R.P in the UK. Skinhead Times collects all their originals from the '80s and the '90s on two discs. To be honest, this came out in 2005, but I just got it for review in 2007! And, not to be left out Insurgence (who only release explicitely left-wing/anti-fascist/working class outfits) did a 'new'record with THE FALLOUT. Not skinheads, but smart as fuck pop-punks that sound like a frenetic J-Church with similarly intelligent, wordly and personal concerns..."

A COUPLE MORE REVIEWS OF THE PRESS AND DEATH IN CUSTODY...
...from EXCLAIM! zine out of Canada:
The Press
The Complete Press 1984-1994
By Keith Carman
It sounds impressive that The Complete Press would compile a decade of material from what is arguably America’s first oi band. However, given the underground nature of the music and ensuing lack of funds, this means a whopping 15 tracks for all of you 4/4 louts out there. Regardless, this beautiful post-mortem does boast a few remastered tunes, unreleased material and, more importantly, proves to recent generations that not all oi bands were mired in grunting about beer and smashing away like robots. Simplistic but inspired, songs such as “ASAP,” “Is It Any Wonder?” and “Revolution Now” feature intelligent lyrics, an upbeat drive and modest political leanings that prove this band were as smart as they were influential. Even the limited recording values only serve to establish this collection as gritty, ballsy and surprisingly enduring. (Insurgence)
Death In Custody
Infected With Rage
By Keith Carman
Blood For Blood would be so happy to know that their unending well of rage and hatred for humanity has been tapped by another group of loogans. Featuring some of the most aggressive New York-influenced hardcore ever to be packed into three inches of aluminium and plastic — yes, this is a full-sized disc with only three inches of music — Infected With Rage still crams 11 wallops of blast beats, chugging breakdowns and gut-busting screams into what feels like a well-balanced meal. Then again, while anger and frustration are great sources of inspiration, it’s tough to keep up throwing down for more than a minute-and-a-half at a time. Regardless, Infected With Rage may run along the same rut as its primary group of influences (Sick Of It All, Haymaker, All Out War) but with the venom dripping out of eloquent shots “Shut Up Fuck You Die,” “Sick Of Your Face” and “Fuck That,” there’s a passion and oh-so-uplifting current that are endlessly entertaining. Reviews Of THE PRESS And THE FALLOUT...
Issue 6 of the always top-shelf OI! WARNING zine has hit the streets...over 80 pages of interviews and reviews (including interviews with UNION MADE and THE FALLOUT!). Well worth getting...
Here's what Sean had to say about a couple of Insurgence releases:
"The Fallout - "Dismantlement" CD
Another gem of a release from Insurgence, this time from Canada's The Fallout who provide you with upbeat, punk-as-fuck, politically charged music. The Fallout's sound reminds me a lot of early bands such as The Clash and Stiff Little Fingers, but without copying 'em, as they do have their own distinctive sound...and it's catchy rebel-rousing stuff! They're socially aware and the lyrics go straight to the point of the matter. This is a great listen and I would advise one and all to check it out...pronto! (Oi! Warning, Number 6)"
"The Press - "The Complete Press 1984 - 1994" CD
Quality release from the Insurgence crew of America's first Oi! band The Press. This 15 track disc epitomises what Oi! is all about and added to that you know that the band are a real working class oufit with sussed politics who took a stance and stood by what they said, and the music ain't half bad either! Good quality sound that seems to draw a lot from the original UK Oi!bands. This digi-pak also comes with a copy of an old flyer with all the lyrics on the back and words about the band from Garry Bushell - all in all a fantastic release that has remastered rarities as well as unreleased gems...a gotta-get as far as I'm concerned. This should be on everyone's 'to listen to' list! (Oi! Warning, Number 6)"

Cheers!

Chris Noone, guitarist for the final line up of The Press serves up his review:
"Finally! A collection of The Press' recorded works: the re-issue of the Skins n' Punks Vol. 5 material, the Institute of Audio Research Sessions, Just Another Warning - from the NY Beat compilation, Friday 5PM - from Oi-Skampilation, as well as other previously unreleased gems. The new mixes are rich, powerful, and hard-hitting, without being over-produced. It was especially good to see Carry On Harry released on a disc, as it's a personal favorite. The Press was an important band, and I'm honored to have been a part of it. Thanks to Insurgence Records and Garry Bushell."

"A Flawless Release" - Review of The New CD By THE FALLOUT
From the September 2007 issue of Equalizing X Distort...:
THE FALLOUT – “Dismantlement” CD
THE FALLOUT remind me a lot of THE CLASH. They write these great songs that have loads of urgency and are politically motivated. And, although the band doesn’t sound like a CLASH knock-off, they do incorporate some CLASH signatures, like the drum rolls in “Compassion Over Killing,” that remind me of “Clash City Rockers.”
One of the underlying themes of “Dismantlement” is the politics of food. The other would be revolution or change. With regard to food, the band writes a great first-hand account of the injustices of agrarian migrant work in “Leaving Ontario.” It reminds me of “Grapes Of Wrath” and Woody Guthrie wrapped into one. “Compassion Over Killing” talks about our complicity in a system that markets the by-products of torture and death. And “Meat Market” is a song that suggests a change in diet based on the various practices of food production, with a line like “it’s time for the whole world to be fed.” So true.
As for the revolution side of the theme, “Peace, Love And Anarchy” lays out the blueprint for revolution. “Change The World Today” is a personal call to make a difference. And, “Fighting For The Lost Cause” is about defending the underdog, which is something that SLF expressed on a more recent album. The two themes intersect on a song like “Bread And Freedom.” But the bands also calls for an end to war in “The End Of The War Years.”
THE FALLOUT have the ability to dream big while pointing out injustices in our backyard. Just like THE CLASH wrote about the poisoning of the Thames River with nuclear effluence in “London Calling,” THE FALLOUT sing about the escalation of gun violence in various neighbourhoods throughout Toronto, pointing to American emulation. And the band does a flattering tribute tribute to the radio show in “Radio Fallout.” But, like all FALLOUT songs, the local examples, like a local punk show, become demonstrations for potential solutions like the development of community media. I have to confess that I blush every time I hear the song. Thanks for the recognition.
Overall, I get a very intelligent analysis of the world after listening to THE FALLOUT release. “Dismantlement” has elements of John Steinbeck and Howard Zinn poured into a punk format. Reasoned, thought-through, level-headed observations of an unbalanced system. It doesn’t hurt that THE FALLOUT write catchy and zippy tunes to go along with these observations. Musically they remind me of INFA RIOTE meets THE CLASH meets THE JAM with ANGELIC UPSTARTS kind of street smarts. A flawless release.

THE FALLOUT - Review Of The New CD
The always excellent Street Voice UK Magazine has just posted a review of the new CD from THE FALLOUT:
THE FALLOUT - Dismantlement
This is the first time I've sat down and really listened to this band and what I hear I really like. 'Dismantlement' contains 13 politically charged songs that will have you pogoing around your room as soon as your hear the first number 'Compassion Over Killing'. From then on this album just comes at you like a smack in the face with a baseall bat. Yep this band takes no prisoners and with terrific songs like 'Riot Boys', 'Meat Market', 'Change The World Today' and 'The End Of The War Years' I promise you'll be won over. If only more poliitcally aware bands were this good then maybe this world wouldn't be in such a mess. This is Punk Rock at it's best and not only do you get a superb album you get a a top production too. The Fallout Rock - It's as simple as that! 9.5/10
The CD is available from Insurgence Records, Interpunk, Itunes, Emusic, etc...
Record Release show in Toronto on September 8th. Details to follow.

Cheers!

New CD By THE FALLOUT Available For Pre-Order!

"Dismantlement", the new CD by THE FALLOUT is now available for pre-order from Insurgence Records.
All pre-orders receive, absolutely FREE, a poster, a Fallout pin and a copy of their "Turning Point" CD...
The band - Lord Byron on guitar, Dr. Bob on drums and Jeremy on bass - play straight-up, stripped-down politically-charged punk rock that's got backbone and backbeat. Here's how one reviewer described the band:
"Drawing their inspiration, both musically and lyrically, from the likes of the Clash, Stiff Little Fingers and D.O.A., the Fallout definitely hold their own, dishing out some real rebel music. Their catchy-as-hell, sing-along, three-chord punk rock packs a definite punch and is coupled with well-crafted and well-articulated, socially-conscious lyrics that crackle with heartfelt anger and urgency. These cats are kind of like a street-punk version of Woody Guthrie." (Exclaim Magazine)
Their first Insurgence release,"Dismantlement" is due out in May and finds these rabble-rousers continuing to fight the good fight. "Dismantlement" is chock full of passionate and positive razor-sharp punk rock - timely, topical and on-target tunes that aim to both agitate and educate.
You can check out a few of the new songs at the band's website and myspace.
Be sure to check out the Insurgence website for an interview they did recently with Maximum Rock 'n Roll.

A Recent Interview With THE FALLOUT
Here's an interview with recent Insurgence signees THE FALLOUT ... From Free Society Zine ...

The Fallout has been together for a bunch of years and you’ve got something like 6 records to your credit. What, if anything, keeps you guys fired-up and moving forward or inspires you to keep knocking out the ‘socially conscious’ punk rock?
Well, we really only have 2 full length releases on Longshot. As our earlier CD’s were independent and now out of print, we have repeated older songs on the first 2 CD’s for Longshot. Our current release is an EP of covers. So we’re not as prolific as it may seem. But we’re just 3 guys that like to rock out more than anything. We get bored fast; hey our songs are quite short, so new songs keep it fresh. We may be ‘socially conscious’ but it’s just that we write about what we know or care about. We write about our lives, our concerns and our country. We don’t write about US foreign policy or fast cars.
Yeah, I've noticed that quite a few of your songs deal less with international issues and more with local specific issues and concerns; things like gun violence in Scarborough, or migrant workers in the Niagara Region or even your paean to the ‘Equalizing X Distort’ punk rock radio show. Is this The Fallout taking the “Think Globally, Act Locally” maxim to heart musically?
I guess we think that local action everywhere amounts to global action. More than anything we sing about concerns we have and can hopefully do something about as Canadians. I can’t vote Bush out of office but I can be outraged by governments I can vote out who have enacted legislation that is clearly stacked against workers as is the case with migrants in our new song ‘Leaving Ontario’.
I see a tendency to focus on US crimes while thinking Canada doesn’t have its’ own shame to bear. It’s easier to point fingers than to look in the mirror. It seems more productive to rage about something we can affect with our votes and our numbers.
OK, so you’ve got a new CD coming out on Insurgence Records this year…I’m guessing we can expect more of the ‘politically charged’ anthems you guys have become known for?
The new CD has lots of punk attitude and challenging lyrics. We move in a few new directions too. We try and draw some connections between animal advocacy, abolition and civil rights. We even do a cover of ‘Strange Fruit’, a song made popular by Billie Holiday about a lynching. The problems we’ve been having with the RAR shows and these fascist-minded boneheads seem to confirm that there’s a need to get these messages out there.
The Fallout played a Rock Against Racism show in Hamilton a little while back. A thread on the Stormfront neo-nazi message board trash-talked that show and the bands involved and one bonehead disparaged that “The Fallout even call themselves ‘punk rock’. They’re anarchists, which means they love the idea of no borders (which would mean one world government and 1 race)” Is this really an accurate description of the band?!
I think we’ve been called communists as well and that we support ‘terror’ groups like ARA. Considering that our lyrics are on our website www.thefallout.ca it should be plain for anyone to see that we are not promoting any particular ideology. We have an old song “Fists of Fury’ that states our position on thug-minded fascists and groups like ARA that react to them. We are clearly anti-violence. We certainly can sympathize with ARA’s cause but not all of their actions. We certainly have some anarcho-syndicalist themes. We are singing about unfair practices or situations some workers in our communities have had to deal with. These are stories that are not well known but are very telling about how are society is really organized. I think most people, regardless of political inclination, would empathize with the unjust conditions some workers face. How anyone can read so far beyond that is incredible, but I guess for these boneheads, reading at all is a first step.
They got the punk rock part right.
There are a couple of songs on the new CD – Meat Market and Compassion Over Killing - that talk about animal liberation. I’m assuming you guys are all vegetarians and concerned with Animal Rights? Any favorite veg/vegan recipes?
Yes, we are all vegetarian. We see it more as animal advocacy.
‘Meat Market’ is stolen from the book ‘Meat Market’ by Eric Marcus. ‘Meat Market’ is an honest look at factory farming and what can reasonably be done to promote animal advocacy. At www.vegan.com you can even download Eric’s first book ‘Vegan – the new ethics of eating’. ‘Compassion over Killing’ is a non-profit animal advocacy group www.cok.net. Hopefully, the idea that factory farming is cruel and unnecessary will continue to spread. I feel that anyone, vegetarian or not, can agree that current factory farming practices are not acceptable. Eric Marcus makes the case that the need to abolish factory farming today has analogies to the abolition of slavery in the 19th century. Just as abolitionists were likely racist, they could accept that slavery was wrong. Today, it seems reasonable to accept that factory farming is wrong, even if you consume animal products. It shouldn’t be so hard to create protection for animals against such cruelty.
There is a new book out, Vegan with a Vengeance: Over 150 Delicious, Cheap, Animal-Free Recipes That Rock by Isa Chandra Moskowitz. I haven’t got it yet but I understand it’s quite good.
The Fallout, or members of The Fallout, have been instrumental in putting together the (pretty much) annual Anti-Warped Tour show in Toronto and you do a song called “Peace, Love And Anarchy” that extols the virtues of this event. What’s the story behind the show? What’s it meant to be?
Jeremy has put together the Annual Anti-Warped tour over the last 10 years. Last year there was difficulty getting a venue but Jeremy will hopefully do it again this year. Anti-Warped is a celebration of independent music. While primarily punk, Jeremy has tried to always include other genres as well. The problem has been that these big shows fail to give an opportunity for local independent bands to have a large showcase. They end up commercially co-opted. So the punk thing has always been to DIY and now it has become a cool alternative on or about the date of the actual tour in Toronto for Jeremy to do the Anti-Warped.
The song ‘Peace, Love, Anarchy’ takes the frustration of being in a punk band and watching the Blink182’s and Sum41’s of this world cash in and dilute the very music you love. But as always there is Anti-Warped to remind us the entire strong, supportive local scene that makes being in a band all worthwhile.
You’ve got a song called “Raise The Minimum Wage” – now that the minimum wage has actually been increased by a whole 25 cents (while the MPPs increased their own salaries at the same time by 25%), will you still be playing this tune, or is it “mission accomplished?”
I guess we should rent a battleship for a photo op, eh? Heh heh. The fact that we need a minimum wage suggests the current economic structure is suspect. We have to prevent by law Capitalists from impoverishing workers. The market may be free but by no means fair. And who opposes the increase? The constituents of the members of parliament? I don’t think anyone who casts a vote is going to be against an increase in pay. This song suggests there are other constituents that the government is listening to. So I think we’ll keep playing the song for a while yet.
Last year you also released a CD called Turning Point which is The Fallout covering a bunch of well-known and not-so-well-known early Canadian punk rock bands. Was this a way for you guys to pay homage to the bands that got you into punk rock?
It hopefully accomplished that and more. When we came up with idea for the CD I saw a need to inform younger fans of the rich Canadian punk tradition. I see so many kids with US and UK bands on their t-shirts. At the last Hamilton RAR show I remember seeing Dead Kennedy’s and Exploited tees. I want to see Youth Youth Youth and Young Lion shirts!
In the last few years we’ve seen Punk History Canada , re-issues from a lot of bands, DOA’s early catalogue, CD’s from Jan Haust’s OPM label, merch through Stacey Case. So it’s starting to happen which is great.
How D.I.Y is The Fallout and why….my understanding is that you do everything yourselves, even to the point of having built your own recording studio from scratch?!
It has become fairly easy for bands to be completely DIY. Technology allows for the easy creation and sharing of music. We want to promote DIY as a way of self-empowerment. If you aren’t getting what you want then get off your ass and make it happen. There’s no reason you can’t. Our studio, The Farm House, is simply our collection of gear at my home. I hope to have a self contained structure to allow other bands to use it too. I hope it can happen this year.
The recording gear we have is professional. We have built gear through resources like www.groupdiy.com and www.DIYfactory.com. Anyone with a library card can learn all they need to do most anything.
Everyone in The Fallout contributes more than just musically. Jeremy is a great graphic artist and booking agent and Bob takes care of our business and legal needs. I twiddle the knobs and handle the soldering iron. We do as much for ourselves as we can. We work with people, like Insurgence Records, who understand and share our ethic.
Finally, any local bands that you would recommend?
Some bands that we’ve played with locally are Angels, Saints and Heroes, BlackJacket, The Rotten. Across Canada , Knucklehead, The Prowlers, Rebel Spell and The Riptide. These bands are all keeping punk alive and deserve support when they come to your town.
